“Ukon-no-Chikara (turmeric power)”, an energy drink produced in Japan, has been a really popular product here. As far as I have read word-of-mouth comments, many people think it has worked and there are only a few who think it doesn’t. As the price is low, “ukon-no-chikara” has grabbed consumers’ hearts.
However, we need to carefully consider not to take excessive amount of turmeric even it’s considered good for health. In this issue, I would like to feature a friend of a thirsty soul “turmeric”.
What is turmeric?
Turmeric originally came from India, and it has been cultivated since the day before the Christ. Japanese curry powder is usually an aki-ukon (autumnal turmeric)-kind which is orange and has less bitterness.
It is said that there are about 50 kinds of turmeric. Turmeric contains an essential oil component and polyphenol (curcumin). In Japan, autumnal turmeric and spring turmeric are popularly used.
Turmeric is considered as a good hangover remedy because it’s rich in curcumin. Autumnal turmeric is especially rich in curcumin, and it contains 10 times as much curcumin as spring turmeric. On the contrary, spring turmeric contains larger amount of essential oil component than autumnal turmeric.
Turmeric is also rich in dietary fiber, iron, potassium, vitamin C, and carotene. Autumnal turmeric is also rich in iron.
Taking excessive amount of autumnal turmeric causes unusual physical reaction due to the absorption of excessive iron.
What is responsible for the severe hangover?
Acetaldehyde is responsible for so called a “hangover”. Once we have taken alcohol into our body, it is absorbed and flows into the blood. Acetaldehyde is produced when alcohol is broken down in the liver by alcohol dehydrogenase.
When you didn’t drink too much or your liver is in a good condition, acetaldehyde is decomposed further to acetic acid, carbonic acid and water. You don’t get a horrible hangover.
However, when you did drink too much or you are tired and your liver receives too much burden already, the liver has lost the power to decompose acetaldehyde so the substance stays in your body.
The accumulated acetaldehyde is the cause of severe hangover symptoms, such as headache, nausea or vomiting.
* People whose face turn read when drinking alcohol either have little alcohol dehydrogenase or low alcohol dehydrogenase activity. Accumulated acetaldehyde expands blood vessels and that’s why the face turns red. It is said that people who becomes red by drinking alcohol have 7 to 10 times higher esophagus cancer risks than those who don’t.
Curcumin saves you from hangover
Curcumin activates alcohol dehydrogenase, and accelerate acetaldehyde decomposition. It also improves bile secretion, strengthens the stomach, and alleviates unpleasant hangover symptoms.
Cautions when taking autumnal turmeric
As long as you take a proper dose, you won’t have any problems.
However, if a person who has liver dysfunction disease-germs in his or her body, taking excessive amount of turmeric may worsen the symptoms. In addition, to people who have ever been infected with hepatitis C or other hepatitis, they are recommended to reduce iron intake.
There is a report saying people with severe liver dysfunction have got severe side effects by just taking an ordinary amount of turmeric. I suppose there are a good amount of people who have received disappointing liver function numerical values. When you are one of them, please consult with your doctor before taking turmeric.
I recommend you to take an enzyme supplement which has powerful digestive power without any side effects.
Turmeric isn’t bad but it’s not recommended to people who have liver problems. To them, the enzyme supplement is the best.
Why do I recommend you to take enzyme supplements rather than turmeric?
